I found Superman Issue #146 to be very interesting. In our last class, we discussed how comic were given away when you buy a certain item and as I read this issue, I noticed the different kinds of advertisements being displayed. There was a coupon for free entrance into an amusement park and ads for tootsie roll products. There was also even two short comics one about “Tricksy: World’s Greatest Stunt Man” and the other was called “Gifts from Your Elders.” I found the mini comics within the Superman Issue #146 to be particularly interesting considering I’m unfamiliar with reading a full issue of a comic book. They’re not only used for entertainment but also used to help advertise not only products but places that appeal to children solely. I found this comic to be more articulate in describing Superman’s origins especially with providing us with Superman’s birth name which was Kal-El. Compared to “The Origin of Superman!” comic, I found this issue to be less comical and noticed how it stayed with the story line of Superman’s hidden identity. For instance, when Superman is a baby in the orphanage his powers are hidden from his caretakers and when he goes to live with Martha and Jonathan Kent his powers are concealed from others because of the location of their home. In “The Origin of Superman!” comic, it displayed the nurses, doctors, and neighbors witnessing Superman’s superpowers which I felt to defeat the purpose of concealing Superman’s identity. “The Origin of Superman!” comic made me laugh a lot. The way Clark realizes his powers was very funny because of the way it was written. Stopping a tractor making him realize he’s indestructible, running home for supper realizing his super speed, hurdling a fence realizing he can jump extreme heights and finding his mother’s glasses realizing he has x-ray vision. It seemed so ridiculous that it was actually really funny. “The Super-Key to Fort Superman” comic was in my eyes super cute. This was my first introduction to a superhero cross-over and I was pleasantly surprised to see the appearance of Batman in a Superman comic. I think because Batman was introduced in the comic, I became very intrigued to see what would happen next. The way Batman plays a prank on Superman and the nature of their relationship reminds me of the term “bromance.” Batman wanted to give Superman a present but didn’t know what to get the man that already has everything and by coming up with this puzzle for Superman to figure out, he ended up giving Superman the best present of all. I like the idea that Superman loves figuring out puzzles and Batman creates one to really play with Superman’s head and confuse him to the point where he really has no idea who the intruder is until Batman’s slip up with the melted wax figure. I like the idea of Lex Luthor becoming friends with Superman but I feel as if every superhero needs an arch nemesis. “The Death of Superman” Issue surprised me. Luthor’s master plan being successful surprised me but then I remembered how in the beginning it was stated how this is an imaginary story that doesn’t really happen. I enjoyed the part where Supergirl takes over Superman’s responsibilities and found her speech about finally being able to help out openly admirable. Her respect for Superman and all that he has done for the world demonstrates her understanding of the expectations the world will have as she replaces Superman. This comic introduced the new possibility of a superhero dying within a comic which is something I’m not familiar with. Since superheroes are always good, I’ve got it in my head that good will always triumph over evil. Overall, I found this week's readings to be informative and very funny. I liked seeing the differences in Superman Origin stories as well as a new twist containing the possibility of Superman's death. |
